Production Visit – Bit Collection
Explore how the Bit Collection, made in Italy, is crafted using advanced rotational molding techniques. Recycled plastic is transformed into bold, multifunctional designs, with each piece featuring a unique pixelated surface that showcases its sustainable origins. This innovative production process ensures durability and circularity, turning discarded materials into versatile stools, lounge chairs and tables. Learn how Normann Copenhagen’s cutting-edge manufacturing techniques are shaping the future of sustainable furniture design.

Precision in the Manufacturing Process
After collecting the plastic waste, it is broken down into smaller fragments and color-sorted into the 10 distinct Bit Stool color variations. For the production process, the color-sorted plastic is precisely weighed to ensure exactly 4.5 kg is used. The material is then poured into the Bit Stool molds and cast using a rotational molding technique at a controlled temperature of 106°C.
This precise temperature is crucial, as overheating can compromise the plastic’s structure, making it unsuitable for future recycling. By maintaining a melting point of 106°C, the Bit Stool can be repeatedly reheated and recycled without affecting the material’s integrity.

Designed for Versatility
The Bit Stool features a circular design that adapts seamlessly to various functions and environments. Whether indoors or outdoors, it can withstand temperatures ranging from -10°C to +50°C. Its simple yet functional design makes it perfect for a variety of uses, from extra seating to a pedestal for a vase or a side table.

Emphasizing Reusability
The Bit Collection is designed with long-lasting durability and usability in mind. The materials can be reheated and reused, preserving the integrity of the plastic, which ensures the item follows a circular life cycle.
Production Visit – Mat Collection
Discover the Mat Collection, produced in Sweden with state-of-the-art production techniques. Crafted from hemp and eelgrass, these organic materials are compression-molded into durable, tactile shells, resulting in chairs and barstools that embody longevity and circularity. This innovative approach redefines furniture production for a sustainable future, blending advanced craftsmanship with timeless design. Learn how Normann Copenhagen creates pieces that are as enduring as they are beautiful.

An Innovative Production Process
The Mat Chair is produced through a precisely engineered process that prioritizes both durability and recyclability. The shells are created using compression molding, where hemp fibers or a mix of hemp and eelgrass are combined with a fully recyclable binder. This technique results in a strong, lightweight shell that retains the natural texture of the materials. After shaping, the shells are cut to size, hand-sanded to a smooth finish, and treated with a VOC-free linseed oil to enhance their durability.

Harnessing the Power of Hemp and Eelgrass
The Mat Chair comes in two versions: one crafted from pure hemp fibers for a lighter tone, and another that blends in eelgrass, offering a richer, darker hue. Both materials are sustainably sourced—hemp from European farms and eelgrass gathered from the Danish coastline. These eco-friendly materials not only minimize waste but also contribute a distinctive texture and aesthetic to the finished design.

Designed for Circularity
The Mat Chair is engineered with durability and recyclability in mind. Both the shells and steel bases are designed for easy disassembly, making it possible to separate and recycle components at the end of their life. Production scraps are repurposed into new chair shells, minimizing waste and supporting a closed-loop production cycle. This approach ensures the chair can be continually reintegrated into new manufacturing processes, reinforcing its long-term sustainability.

The Challenges and Rewards of Material Innovation
Designing a 3D shell chair from natural fibers presented several challenges, especially in sourcing high-quality hemp and eelgrass fibers that met rigorous durability and aesthetic standards. Unlike conventional materials, these fibers have natural variations, giving each Mat Chair a unique tone and texture. Despite these obstacles, the commitment to material innovation has led to a groundbreaking design that establishes new benchmarks for responsible furniture production.

A Step Toward a More Thoughtful Future
With the Mat Chair, Normann Copenhagen paves the way for the future of furniture production, blending timeless design with sustainable material choices. By continuously refining production processes and fostering partnerships that prioritize circularity, we strive to push the limits of innovation and contribute to a more resource-conscious industry.
Revolution of Furniture Design and Production: Bit Stool and Mat Chair
In embracing innovative materials and sustainable production methods, both the Bit Stool and Mat Chair showcase Normann Copenhagen’s dedication to creating designs that are as responsible as they are beautiful. From the recycled plastic of the Bit Stool to the natural fibers of the Mat Chair, these pieces set new standards for durability, recyclability, and aesthetic value. As we continue to refine our approach to circularity, these products represent a significant step toward a more thoughtful, resource-conscious future in furniture design.
