When it comes to designing furniture for your house, colour is an important consideration – not just when it comes to matching the perfect shade of blue throw pillows to compliment your grey couch, or making sure the green vase doesn’t clash with the orange side table. It’s also important to consider the psychology behind the colours.

It’s something that you have probably heard of before, or at the very least, understand subconsciously. The colours of our surroundings can actually affect our emotions and how we feel about the room we’re in. Certain colours can have different effects, from making you feel calm – blues and purples – to making you feel energized – reds and greens. Learning to understand the “effects” behind certain colours is key to harnessing the true potential of interior design. Here at Normann Copenhagen, we’ve broken down some basic colour psychology, as well as hand-picked some of our favourite coloured items to help you change the way you view your space.

Red

Red is a great colour to provide a sense of energy. It is used to show ambition, action, and willpower. This makes it a great selection for home offices, or creative spaces, to help give that extra boost of energy. It can also make a “cool” room feel a bit warmer. However, since red is quite a bold colour, it is best when it is used sparingly, as an extra pop, rather than the centrepiece.

With a sleek and striking design, Studio Armchair creates an understated yet bold contemporary chair design. Made with powder coated steel, the flowing lines create a slender silhouette, yet still maintains a comfortable edge with full upholstery. Inspired by French factory chairs, the Studio Armchair brings a modern touch, and creates the perfect statement piece for your office.

The Era Collection is designed with a classic approach, making it a versatile piece fit for any home. With its timeless style, it pairs well with other furniture pieces as well as being a great statement piece when placed alone.  When configured in red, the Era’s streamlined design and high quality material creates a durable, long-lasting and versatile space that easily accommodates modern interior’s need for flexibility.

Orange

Orange is one of the more underrated colours – but when used correctly, it can be a unique addition to your home. It invites a feeling of playfulness, or invigoration, and is actually shown to encourage social interaction. This makes orange a great selection for entrance halls or dining rooms, any place you want to stimulate conversation.

Bold and bright are the perfect words to describe the Ace Lounge Chair. Available in a bright orange, the Ace Lounge Chair is crafted from Steel and PU foam to create a sturdy and soft experience. Yellow

It is no secret that yellow can be a cheerful colour. It goes perfectly for when you want to warm up rooms, and create a welcoming atmosphere. However, it also has the added effect of brightening smaller spaces, making them seem a bit bigger. Because of this, yellow is a great option for bathrooms or kitchens. Of course, the bright and fun colour is also a perfect selection for nurseries, playrooms, and children’s rooms.

Bit Stool is one of Normann Copenhagen’s newest products, but it has fast become a fan favourite. Created from industrial waste, the Bit Stool not only looks great, but also saves the planet too. The bright colour combined with the rounded design of Sum creates a truly welcoming atmosphere.

Green is also one of the most versatile colours, and can go well in any place! We suggest adding in a plant into the corners of some rooms or as table centrepieces, to help bring a sense of balance to your whole house.

When configured in blue, it creates a great sense of harmony with the rest of the space, while adding a subtle pop of colour to your environment..

Purple

Purple is one of the trickier colours to work with. Evoking a sense of regality and luxury, and overabundance of purple can come off as a bit gaudy. So, it’s suggested that just a hint of purple will do – in an entry hall to impress guests, or in your bedroom, for an extra touch of luxury.

Circus Pouf is the perfect option for adding that little pop of colour and opulence. Inspired by antique Moroccan leather poufs, Circus is made with high quality velvet and HR foam, for a truly luxurious experience. The rounded shape and large size makes it a versatile and inviting design for any room. We recommend the Circus Pouf in purple velvet for that extra touch of decadence.

Pink

While pink is often viewed as overly feminine or childish, it can be a great colour to add throughout the house. It invokes feelings of love and nurturing, which, while it goes well in a playroom or nursery, can also be added in other rooms, through pillows or blankets, to add an extra layer of comfort in your home.
